Why Payroll Uses Decimal Hours
Most payroll systems and time clocks store hours as decimals rather than hours and minutes. For example, 8 hours and 30 minutes is recorded as 8.50 decimal hours — not 8.30.
How to Convert Minutes to Decimal
Divide the number of minutes by 60, then add that to the whole hours:
Example: 7 hours 45 minutes45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 → 7.75 decimal hours
Common Decimal Hour Conversions
- 15 minutes = 0.25 hours
- 30 minutes = 0.50 hours
- 45 minutes = 0.75 hours
- 8 hours 15 minutes = 8.25 hours
- 8 hours 45 minutes = 8.75 hours
Why 8:30 Is Not 8.30 in Payroll
A common mistake is entering 8 hours 30 minutes as 8.30. In decimal format, 8.30 actually means 8 hours and 18 minutes (0.30 × 60 = 18). The correct decimal for 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.50.
